How to Sprout Wheatgrass

by Paul Payne on September 5, 2009

Sprouted wheat is really simple to grow.  Some people eat it as it has a sweet taste and chewy texture.  I use it grow my own wheatgrass for juice.

4 Steps to Sprout Wheatgrass

There’s a few ways to sprout wheat, but I think this is the easiest:

  1. Put one cup of Wheatgrass seed (aka wheat berries)I into a glass jug or bowl.
  2. Tip two cups of water and leave it overnight in your kitchen cupboard.
  3. The next morning, your soaked wheatgrass berries need to be drained.  Using a sieve is easiest.  Now, pop them back into the bowl/jug.
  4. Give them a rinse the same evening and once again the next morning.  Keep this process up until they have sprouted.  They are ready once the tail is as long as the seed.

The wheatgrass seeds should only take a day or two to sprout although it can take a little longer during the cold months.

It’s super important not to leave seeds in the water too long after you have given them their initial soak.
